I just got in another argument with my mother about that dad that shot his daughter’s laptop
She was talking to my grandmothers about how “awesome” it was, how his daughter needed to learn to respect him, and that she got what she deserved.
I love my mom and she’s done a lot to take care of me, and I respect the hell out of her, but not when she talks about shit like that.
What that father did was use a deadly weapon to silence his daughter. If she was being a little shit, you know what, kids do that. It does not excuse violence and a psychologically abusive climate of fear.
My mother brought up the fact that she and my dad used to spank us or use the belt on us [re: me and my siblings] when we were out of turn or being disrespectful, and she made the assertion that it taught me to respect my parents. I said, “It didn’t teach me to respect you. What it taught me was that if I said something you or Dad didn’t like, I would get hit. It made me afraid of speaking out. It didn’t teach me respect. It taught me fear.”
And then I just walked away.
